Some parents save their kids’ baby teeth or strands of hair from their first trip to the barbershop, but Alyson Hannigan? Well, she’s preserving her daughter’s chinchilla bladder stone. It’s completely understandable if you need to let that information set in for a second.
The How I Met Your Mother star recently shared an unusual arts-and-crafts project on a TikTok she posted earlier today. In the video, Hannigan turns the bladder stone into a keepsake by creating a shadowbox display for it.
While most people probably wouldn’t think to turn something that was surgically removed from an animal into home decor, the 52-year-old actress, despite being hesitant at first, appears to have embraced the creative opportunity.

While Hannigan and her family were out of town, their pet sitter called to say the chinchilla wasn’t acting like itself, so the sitter took him to the vet. Cosmo, the pet, got an X-ray, and the veterinarian found that he was passing a bladder stone. Hannigan then proceeded to show a tiny X-ray image, along with the medical container the bladder stone was placed in.
And for those wondering how a chinchilla could even develop a bladder stone, the small rodents can experience urinary issues, including the formation of bladder stones or sludge. According to Oxbow Animal Health, symptoms can include blood in the urine, frequent urination, and painful urination.
One of the reasons the Buffy alum decided to keep it is because the operation “cost so much money” that they decided they might as well take it home.
She also gave an update on Cosmo’s condition, revealing, “He’s fine now, by the way.” After completing the craft, Hannigan admitted that she hopes to never do anything like this again.
But the actress is no stranger to sharing her creative side online. Earlier this month, she gave fans a tour of her elaborate Halloween decorations, which included actual props from her days starring in the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
